So as I was saying it’s February 2016 and as I alight the bottom stair in my home I decide to write a song for a special occasion.
After the initial exuberance at my brilliant idea I begin to weigh up the pros and cons of my masterplan.
The Pros:
- I can write – in my lifetime I have always been a writer of sorts, a reader, a communicator
- It would be a unique gift
What’s not to like about this idea or bout of madness depending how you look at it?
Then I begin to think about the cons – and I’m swamped by negativity.
The Cons:
- I cannot play any musical instruments
- I cannot read or write music
- I don’t know anyone musical
- I’ve never written a song
I recoil in a sea of negativity and then bounce back with an extraordinary thought:
Well, if I have no skillset to bring to songwriting I cannot fail because no one will expect it to be any good anyway? I like this idea and all of a sudden I’m encouraged by my own stupidity.
I turn right and enter my front room as I open my Iphone (more of an Ibrick as I think back – it was so old) and from the top of my head I began to sing into the microphone with words and a melody I have never heard before – because I’m inventing it as I go. I’m sure it will sound terrible but who cares – no one will ever hear it will they? Writing a song is just a pipe dream but what if I could?
Well I did and the theme I chose?
I’ll tell you more about that in the next blog article.
Musically yours,
Odynson
